Strategies for Incremental Reconstruction of Disaster Damaged Homes

Newport Partners prepared the above document for the Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide an option for rebuilding following a disaster.

"Applying these strategies will also nurture the cohesion of the community as it helps everyone reinvest in a new beginning for themselves and by extension, their community.” ~ Mayor Bob Dixson, Greensburg, KS

Safer, Stronger Homes: Reducing Your Risk During a Natural Disaster

Welcome to the Safer, Stronger, Homes project website. The goal of this site is to educate homebuilders and prospective homebuyers on how to make their homes better resist the forces of nature.

The materials on this site were prepared by Newport Partners, LLC and ARES Consulting under funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Policy Development and Research. An expert advisory committee helped identify a resource guide of 14 strategies to enable users to better understand costs, their benefits, and additional information for implementation. This site and its contents are a temporary location for the materials being developed under the HUD-funded program. As different methods of reaching builders, homeowners, and others are evaluated as part of this program, the final materials will be made available through HUD directly. Visitors to this site will be redirected to the final materials at that time.

The strategies are ordered according to the type of force they are designed to resist including:

Wind Wind (hurricanes, thunderstorms, tornadoes) Flooding Earthquakes
Wind-Driven Rain Wind-Driven Rain (associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, thunderstorms) Earthquake Flooding (coastal and inland)
